Symplocos racemosa is a small evergreen tree with broad crown, up to 6 m high. Leaves are 9-18 cm long, elliptical, oblong, lanceolate, apex is obtuse-acuminate, acute or obtuse, with serrate, crenate obscure or rarely entire margin. Flowers are 1-1.3 cm in diameter, white or light yellowish in color. The fruit is a drupe 1-1.3 cm long, oblong, black-purple in color.
Chemical composition – Contains triterpene- betulin acid, betulinic acid, oleolinic acid, acetyloleolinic acid.
Bark contains monomethyl pelargonidine glucosides (I și II), symposide, and pelargonidine-3-O-glucosidic, alkaloids- loturidine, loturine, eloturine and coloturine, 5-β-sitosterol and its glicoside, 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl-2 -α-3 α-23-tetra-hydroxy Olean-12-en-28-oic-β. Analoague glycosides include 3, 28-O-bis β-D-glucopyranoside of-α hydroxy arjunolic acid and 19- α hydroxy asiatic acids.
Properties- Astringent, eye tonic, expectorant, anti-inflammatoyr, hypotermic, depurative, febrifuge, hemostatic, stomachic, aphrodisiac and emenagogue, tonic uterine, cardiotonic, antihelmintic.
