The sun has become “the greatest enemy” of man in summer and the methods of protection from sunrays become common topics for discussion among specialists, both medical doctors as well herbalists and homeopaths. The sun may cause a state of drowsiness, a situation where excessive loss of body fluids can increase body temperature whereas ultraviolet rays are one of the main causes of skin cancer in present time. The most common disorders that may occur due to heat are: dizziness, cramps, feeling of exhaustion and heatstroke. When the body becomes overheated and can not drop the temperature by its own methods then it is said that the person has heatstroke and has a temperature up to 40.5 degrees Celsius without sweating.
Among the most common symptoms of heatstroke are associated with migraine are dizziness, nausea, chills, increased heart rate, accentuated sensation of thirst. According to experts, the risk of headache increases by about 7% to every 2-3 degrees increase in temperature. Migraine is a chronic illness characterized by moderate to severe recurrent headaches. Migraine may occur once or twice a year or multiple times per month. They are usually associated with other symptoms also (nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light or noise). Generally, headaches are aggravated by physical activity and force the person to avoid physical activity which is the most common cause of severe headaches. Approximately 20% of women and 6% of men are affected. The onset is common in adolescence or childhood, and the frequency is high in people of 25- 55 years of age. After 55 years the frequency of attacks decreases, especially in women.
In general, a migraine headache can be caused by foods to which the person is allergic, but later aggravated by different stimulating agents. For example, the cause of a migraine can be the allergy to cheese or perfume while trigger factor can be an emotional disorder. Other triggers agents may include different foods such as chocolate or apples. Foods containing tyramine, such as cheese and wine, may cause or act as triggers for recurrent headaches. Also, sun allergy is a reaction of the immune system that is manifested by headache, nausea, occurrence of skin reactions. People suffering from allergies may also have other symptoms such as blisters on the skin with bleeding. Just 3 minutes exposure to the sun is enough for triggering the above described effects.
Young people resist well enough to heat and the sun, but heatstroke can cause death (e.g. in the United States., approx. 5,000 deaths are recorded annually due to heatstroke). Preventive recommendation include, consuming plenty of fluids, using head covers, avoid sun exposure in the interval of 11.00 to 16.00 hours, and if the person is forced to perform physical activities in the sun, it is preferable to shelter himself in the shade, periodically. Also, a shower, bed rest with a support of pillow for head may be helpful in hastening the disappearance of the effects of heatstroke.
