Anemia is characterized by a decreased (below normal) concentration of hemoglobin in the blood which can be a symptom of problems of improper nutrition, chronic disease, hemolysis or cancer. Anemia not only indicates the presence of disease, but also significantly reduces the patient’s ability of complete recovery after illness. Hemoglobin is a complex protein (contains iron) which is the most important component of red blood cells (also called RBCs or erythrocytes). Hematocrit is the ratio of red blood cell volume and plasma volume expressed in percentage.
Weakness, headaches and continued drowsiness are some of the specific symptoms of anemia and affect many people especially in spring and fall. Patients who suffer from anemia develop fatigue as the first observed symptom. They feel lethargic, tired both mentally and physically, even feel difficulty to climb a few stairs or while doing other physical and mental activities. Hypotensive persons may also develop anemia, but in that case hypotension may not be associated with anemia. Also, the disease like enlarged spleen provoking anemia have to be treated preventively or as soon as they evolve in the body.
Anemia is of several types, but has as main feature diminishing supply of oxygen to tissues (decreased tissue/cell oxygenation). One of the types of anemia occurs due to iron deficiency caused by shortage of iron and known as Iron deficiency anemia can also be occurred due to inadequate and insufficient gastrointestinal assimilation of iron due to blood loss (heavy menstrual cycles, internal bleeding caused by an ulcer or cancer, frequently bleeding hemorrhoids, etc). Iron deficiency anemia is more common in women (especially in case of pregnancy or during periods of quick growth) than in men. If this manifestation is ignored or remains untreated, it may cause major health problems such as heart problems.
Diet has an important role to treat anemia. Carrot juice contains significant quantities of some of the most important elements like iron, vitamin C, vitamin B2, folic acid which help in the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin. Anti-anemic treatment involves consuming carrot juice in the morning on empty stomach. Daily consumption of two glasses of carrot juice, will replace a breakfast for one month. Diet includes iron-rich foods like: soy, peas, beans, nettles, lettuce, spinach, sorrel, beets, turnips, tomatoes, garlic, onion, parsley, apricots, figs, blackberries, peaches, strawberries, red grapes, beef and pork meat, organs like liver, kidney, heart and beef liver, egg yolk, milk, nuts, hazelnuts, etc.
Also herbs containing minerals, especially iron and vitamins (especially vitamin C essential for iron absorption) can also be used successfully for the treatment of anemia.
