Cinnamomum camphora is an evergreen tree, growing up to 20-30 m in height. The leaves have a waxy, shiny aspect and smell of camphor when crushed. In spring, it produces bright green foliage with masses of small white flowers. It produces clusters of black fruits like berries around 1cm in diameter. Bark is yellow, very hard and cracked vertically.
Chemical composition – Contains alpha-pinene, camphene, beta-pinene, sabinene, phellandrene, limonene, 1,8-cineol, gamma-terpinene, p-cymene, terpinolen, furfural, camphor, linalool, bornyl acetate, terpinen-4-ol , caryophyllene, borneol, piperiton, geraniol, safrole, cinnamaldehyde, eugenol and methyl cinnamate.
Properties – Analgesic, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, cardioprotective, carminative, diuretic, febrifuge, laxative, rubefacient, stimulant, sudorific, vermifuge and healer.
