Adhatoda vasica known as Vasa or Vasaka is a medicinal plant native to Asia. The plant is found in Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and China. Adhatoda vasica is a shrub with lance-shaped leaves 10 to 15 inches long. The leaves are arranged opposite, smooth have cuts (edges) and supported on short petioles. When dry, leaves have brown-green color. The leaves are bitter in taste. They are surrounded by two crescent-shaped cells. The leaves are used for medicinal purposes.
Chemical composition – The leaves contain alkaloids quinazolines, vasicine, N-oxide of vasicine, vasicinone, deoxivasicine, oxivasicinine, maiontone essential oils.
Properties – Anti asthmatic, antispasmodic, antitussive, bronchodilator, expectorant, febrifuge, mucolytic, oxytocic, uterotonic, antihistaminic, hypotensive, assists uterine involution, uterine stimulant.
Recommendation – Blood pathology, bleeding due to idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, cardiovascular problems, lung disease, menorrhagia (excessive menstrual bleeding), postpartum hemorrhage, dyspepsia, peptic ulcer, bleeding due to local and/or piles (hemorrhoids), acute and chronic bronchitis, allergic asthma, emphysema, respiratory obstructive problems.
